Thabang Tabane – Nyanda Yeni
Recorded live in backyard of the Tabane household in Mamelodi, South Africa, we are excited to present Nyanda Yeni – the first single from Thabang Tabane’s upcoming, long awaited debut solo album, Matjale.
Son of the late, legendary Dr Philip Nchipi Tabane, who originated and pioneered malombo music in the early 1960s, Thabang has been touring the world, playing with his father’s band and other South African luminaries since he was 8 years old.
Nyanda Yeni finds Sibusile Xaba’s angular, tweaked guitar and Thabang’s percussive effervescence circling each other; miniature whirling dervishes. In an almost dizzying, looping game of never-ending hide-and-seek, the traditional plea for rain is silk-spun into malombo modernity with Dennis Moanganei Magagula on percussion and Thulani Ntuli on bass guitar.
The album, Matjale, will be released internationally on 14 September 2018.
You can stream or purchase the single on Spotify, Apple Music / iTunes, Deezer, Google Play, Tidal and most of the other established digital platforms. You can also purchase the single at our SHOP.
We are also excited to present the official music video for Nyanda Yeni, directed and edited by StraitJacket Tailor. The video is composed primarily of archival footage taken from apartheid-era cinema from South Africa endorsing the notion of ‘separate development’. By taking apart old propaganda films and their fallacies of coonish fantasy, it slices and splices them in order to re-order their meanings. In other words, it subverts. Taking us for a loop. Also included in the film are short video clips of the legendary, late Dr. Philip Tabane performing, creating an arch that links father and son in life, love and malombo.
